When your guests volunteer to help out in the kitchen, or offer to help clean up after a meal do you let them pitch in? I've had this happen a number of times and never know how to respond - what do you do in situations like this?
Each Tuesday, we will discuss a different topic relating to etiquette. If there are any topics you would like to suggest please PM me. I would love to hear your thoughts! Other Etiquette Topics Trick Or Treating: How Late to Knock?

It depends on who it is that is offering. If it's one of my little sisters or little sister-in-law...by all means...here is a towel and there is the soap...knock yourselves out. LOL. I know when I go to somebody's house, I want to help because they've done so much to prepare the meal, the least I can do is bring dishes into the kitchen. If it is after dinner, I accept the help. I've had some of my best conversations with guests in the kitchen while we are cleaning up before dessert. I insist that my guests leave the dessert dishes for my husband and I. I prefer to just sit with my guests after dessert and do not rush to clean up.

If they want to help, I would let them in most cases, unless it was a very formal party. My bigger beef tends to be at family gatherings where everyone is helping, but those one or two people that always just sit and watch. These are usually the same one's that take home huge portions of leftovers and only brought a 2 liter to the party.

I always protest vehemently, but usually it's pretty obvious that I need the help and I get overridden by my family who will get up and assist no matter what I say.
Non-family guests aren't that bold and I can usually fend them off, thanking them for their kind offer.
Outmanuevered on all counts, I opt to change the rules.

Sure! Let them help! I'll probably just waste my breath trying to get them out of the kitchen! But, I really do hate a crowded kitchen...too many helpers can be a burden more than a help!

I dont ususally allow them to help, its my home i have invited them over for a nice meal and to hand out so that means all the work belongs to me. :o)

Depends on who asks, I do not allow certain people in the kitchen because they are here as guests, but friends and family can pitch in all they want.... helps me enjoy myself and so much bonding occurs there.
